I was in the mood for anthology, so Lore, An Anthology: Tales of Myth and Legend Retold
was a great read for me. I like some stories more than the others, but
overall it was a nice read and I came out knowing much more about myths
and legends. The first story, Shimmer, is a mermaid
story with a twist in the end. It has romantic atmosphere, but the
pacing is a bit too slow for my taste. I found the second story, Between,
very interesting. It’s a classic high school elite clique story, but
the appearance of djinn (genie) make this story memorable. I think the
LGBT stuff can be taken more carefully, but I like the story in general.
In my opinion, Sunset Moon has the strongest characterization
in this anthology. It’s a bad girl meet good guy story, and their
relationship is definitely swoon-worthy! I love Native American
folklore, so it’s not hard for me to fall for this one. :) The Maker…
what can I say? It’s a take on golem mythology and the story reminds me
a bit of Frankenstein. The guy makes a golem in order to take revenge
on his girlfriend. The story lays heavily on description of action and
it can bug you at times, but the plots are simply intriguing. I can
definitely see the author’s potential in the story. A Beautiful Mourning
has very beautiful, flowing written style. The story has poetic
atmosphere in it which I’m sure many will appreciate. I love the ending
in The Barricades. It ends with a hopeful note, and I think it suits well as the last story in this anthology. All in all, Lore, An Anthology: Tales of Myth and Legend Retold is a fascinating read for me. If I have to play favorite, I think it would be A Beautiful Mourning. I’m a sucker for beautiful writing style and melancholic plots. ;) Sunset Moon
is good as well. This anthology is a recommendation for anyone who
wishes to visit many myths and legends in one go. From mermaid story to
golem myth: just pick your favorite lore! :) The heat from
his skin dulled as his sharp eyes softened. “I will love as the
mortals.” He leaned in and brushed his lips against mine. My eyes
fluttered shut. “Fearlessly and without limitations.”
Stephanie
squinted and took a deep breath as she looked out at the field. “How do
you know it’s white? Who taught you that snow is white?”
Sophie
is the girl who lived in a cage. For seventeen years of her life, she
has lived in isolation with her father. Her father told her that this is
for their own good. The outside world is bad, and this is his way of
protecting her. Bars in her windows and tall chain-linked gate are
supposed to be Sophie’s barrier to the outside world. Her father did all
these things to protect Sophie… wasn’t he?
Papa didn’t mean to
kill Damien. He shot him because he wants to scare Damien… not because
he wants Damien dead. There is no mirror in their house because it takes
away from focusing on God. Sophie is a curse and she has to keep
hidden, because anyone who loved her would die. Sophie’s mother is dead
because of her. Sophie has always believed her father, but when things
happen and she has to live with family she believes hating her, secrets
start to come out. Now it’s time for Sophie to choose which side she has
to believe.
I’m not very fond of drama on every page, but I’ll
make exception for this book. This book is full of raw emotions and
surprising twists. It’s a very complex story when a girl has to suffer
because of what generation before her did. The characters in this book
are vivid and very realistic. I’m so relieved that Sophie meets
Stephanie, her step cousin. Stephanie helps Sophie questioning about the
life she has always known. She’s truly a best friend to Sophie.
The
curse is not something that I expected. Brenda Stanley did an amazing
job of showing us parts when Sophie’s parents met. The author leads us
to believe that the curse might really exist. I was taken to a journey
with Sophie to unravel the secret behind her birth and the curse that
was said put upon her. The ending is full of hope and I’m really glad
how it turns out. Sophie may always be the girl who lived in a cage, but
in the end she learns how to free herself.
I knew it was
for the best and tried to accept why it was necessary. But even though I
had never been to another person’s house or seen another girl’s
bedroom, I knew in my heart that this wasn’t right…that I wasn’t normal.
My isolation was even more apparent, and for the first time in my life,
it mattered.
Shawn and
Ronnie have been in love since they’re twelve years old. Shawn is
Ronnie’s first kiss, first love, first boyfriend, and first everything.
Shawn was once the sweet boy who prepared Ronnie a very special picnic
because he said the coolest girl in the world needs the most perfect
spot for her first kiss. Ronnie believes that twenty years after, she
would still be with Shawn, in love.
This is their senior year and
Shawn starts acting weird. He is easily irritated, irrationally
possessive, and tense all the time. His outbursts start leaving bruises
on Ronnie’s body. Ronnie keeps making excuses for Shawn’s strange
behaviors. It must be temporary, because she can still see glimpses of
the guy he fell in love with. Love means keeping up with your loved one
in the hard time… right?
Things begin spinning out of control,
and Ronnie is desperate to fix everything and has her perfect life back.
Ronnie plays Juliet in a play while her best friend, Luke, plays Romeo.
Shawn is the love of her life, but why does her heart flutter every
time she sees Luke? Why does everything feel so easy and comfortable
with Luke? When Ronnie’s and Juliet’s feeling mingle, she can’t see the
difference between Juliet’s lines and her words anymore on stage.
Knee
Deep is the kind of book that will suck you from the first passage. The
descriptive words are beautiful and the atmosphere between the
characters is so thick. I keep feeling that something bad is going to
happen, and the tension makes me uneasy, nervous, and breathless at the
same time.
It’s not like I can’t understand Ronnie. She’s a
character I like from the beginning. She has overwhelming desire to fix
anything wrong so she has always been the first who offers peace after
her argument with Shawn. I think deep down, Ronnie has already known
that there’s a crack in their relationship. She only refuses to see the
crack, because she’s supposed to have her happy ending with Shawn.
They
are in a destructive relationship, and throughout the book I just want
Ronnie to admit it. Shawn might be Ronnie’s perfect guy once, but now,
he’s a ticking bomb waiting to explode. For the life of Ronnie, I just
want to shout out at her to please, please do what you know you have to
do if you want to save your life.
Knee Deep is a wonderful book
and I admire how much the characters’ feeling exposed in the story.
Ronnie does make mistakes, but in the end she learns that sometimes,
some things are not meant to be. This book deals with fairly hard issues
and I’m very glad to tell you that the result is amazing.
There’s
something incredible about being loved by someone I’ve known for so
long. Like he knows me, loves me, and yeah, it’s this thing I can count
on. Solid. Stable.
This book is completely and totally adorable. It has all the elements
needed to make perfect and Disneyesque book: two geeky and lovable
heroines, mean popular girls, not-so-bright jocks, annoying sibling, and
swoon-worthy heroes!
Molly and Ally are self-proclaimed geeks.
Boy, do I ever meet any clumsier character than them! Imagine this.
Their physical coordination is so bad that they hit each other every
time they try to do high-five! But the girls are also adorable in every
sense possible. They love to dress in 80s attire, and they’re not afraid
to be different. Although there are times they lose themselves
somewhere in their effort to be popular, you can expect them to get
their chins up and stand up straighter!
Retro Geeks is a fun and
light book you would love to read in one sitting, just like me! I really
hope that this book could be adapted into ad TV show someday, because
it’s just too fun to miss! Get ready to read the misadventure of Molly
and Ally, and how they find out that the only thing better than being
popular girls is being their own quirky, unique individuals.
Dylan pulled up the pig's intestines for the girls to see. “The intestines, of course.”
The girls gagged once again. The intestines looked like the school cafeteria’s pasta delight.
“Prom should be quite a romantic evening for the right couple,” Dylan remarked as he gazed longingly at Molly.
But the girls could not take their eyes off of the horror show that was the dissected pig.
Three cups of tea. I like it. Recommended to read in spare time.

It is one night. The Night that wrecked not only her life, but also his life.
Trinity McCabe has sworn that she would become a new self after the
Catastrophic Night that involved two cars, a dog, lots of tears, and
sirens. In the late years of her seventeenth, she had committed many
poor decisions. She was friends with people she shouldn’t have with. Her
grades are poor and she barely passed her classes. She did drugs and
she drank way too much.
Trinity decided that she had enough and she would like to change
herself, but then The Night happened. The Night when Aidan Achelles took
all the blame and went to juvy. The Night when Aidan acted all
knight-in-shining-armor. The Night that makes Trinity goes autopilot and
she sleepwalks through her life, hidden in the comfort of her flannel
pajama.
Trinity doesn’t even think that she deserves second chance. However,
people around her seem disagree at that idea. Even Aidan forgives her
and they gradually become friends. Everything seems perfect for awhile.
But for how long this little peaceful time would last? Will Trinity
finally able to escape from her past? And could she save Aidan in time,
when Aidan starts avoiding her and hangs out with people from Trinity’s
past?
Forgiving Trinity is a complex story and the kind of book that will
make you think after. I have been warned before that Forgiving Trinity
tackles some serious stuff and it’s more appropriate for mature YA
readers. I won’t recommend this book for younger readers because the
mention of drugs, alcohol, and parties. Even though drugs using is not
explicitly told, the emotional and gory aspects of this story aren’t
suitable for younger readers.
I never got when and why exactly Trinity started to fall into that
pit of darkness. She has amazing family and I’m sure that she had some
pretty good friends in Junior High. Maybe it’s a rebellious phase but in
my opinion, two years are very long time to let your daughter and
little sister becoming stranger to you. It would be much better if her
parent had taken some preventing steps before Trinity crushed and was in
a big problem. I didn’t understand why they didn’t ground her and told
her to stop seeing her ‘friends’ earlier.
Nonetheless, I really like it that her family is very supportive of
her healing process. Trinity’s brother, Christian, genuinely cares for
his little sister and I think that’s really sweet of him. I love it that
Trinity has a new girl friend, Ruth, along the process. Their
friendship is lovely and I found myself genuinely happy when Trinity
finally has someone she can confide her thoughts about Aidan and a fairy
godmother in fashion business sometimes.
I like this book because the whole healing process seems very real. Trinity tries really hard to become the new, clean Trinity and it’s
not an easy task. There is nothing instant about forgiving yourself
because you can’t pretend that all bad stuff you had done in the past
can be erased magically from your history. Trinity did run away a good
amount of times but it is all part of her healing process. I without
doubt can feel that she grows up a lot throughout the story. The
characters are complex, very human-like, and completely relatable. In
mood to read a realistic YA book with believable characters, intricate
story line, and possibility of being a tear-jerker? Then this is the
book for you!
As much as I want Bad Trinity purged from my life, I realize
that Good Trinity also has to go. I’m not either one anymore. I consider
that I should, maybe, focus on figuring out what I’m not instead of
what I am.

Top ten
things that make me swoon about a guy ♥
Thank you to Hilda for letting me crash on her blog and talk about one
of my favorite subjects EVER!! Okay, I’m going to be honest with you.
LOTS of things make me swoon about guys. I’m a romantic. I’ve been
checking boys out since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and I love all
different guys for all different reasons. Geeks, athletes, bad boys,
sensitive souls, artists, funny guys…love ‘em. I’m an equal opportunity
guy appreciator. But there are some deal-breakers for me, so I’m going
to share.
1) Manners. Sexy, Sexy, Sexy Manners.
When I first met my husband he was a little rough around the edges.
He smoked and drank and drove a big truck too fast. One day my grandma
came to the restaurant where we worked carrying boxes. Frank ran like
there was a fire so he could grab those boxes. Actually he almost caused
a grease fire, because he left hamburgers burning. But that’s the kind
of guy he is. He never, ever sits on a bus if a lady needs a seat, he
holds doors open, he says please and thank you, he always leaves a nice,
big tip. I. LOVE. THIS! Manners are hot! If you’re with a guy who
doesn’t have ‘em, LOSE HIM!!
Why yes, you can wear my hat. Please don’t feel like you have to
walk all the way over there. I’ll be happy to carry you. Why? Because
I’m a gentleman. You’re welcome.
2) Tattoos
They’re not for everyone. I am completely ink free and probably
always will be. I just have no clue what I’d get. Or where. But ink on
other people can be so gorgeous, and ink on guys? Oh swoon!! I like when
it’s artistic and shows a little of their sensitive side. So, I’m a
huge sucker for the names of children, odes to mothers, snippets of
poetry, mythical creatures. Bring it and I WILL ogle!!
Why, hello, Adam. Yes. I would love to discuss your tattoos. As art, natch! Art. Lovely, lovely art…
3) Work Ethic
Call me old-fashioned, but I love a guy who values hard work. Not
that he has to work on a crabbing boat or as a welder, but he needs to
feel the need to work and take pride in what he does. My husband happens
to be blessed with the jack-of-all-trades gene. I’m not gonna
lie…watching him lay a floor/build a deck/tile a kitchen counter/pain
the living-room makes me feel a little dizzy and excited. Especially
when he works shirtless. And I can see his tattoos. Excuse me for a
quick second. I think the sink is dripping…maybe my husband can lose his
shirt and get on that?
So maybe he got a tad violent in Drive, but he just does what he
does really well. Whether it’s beating a guy to a pulp…no really, like
to pulp…or working on a car or driving, RG has the work ethic going on!!
4) Must Love Kids
Not in that corny talking-too-loud in their faces way. A guy who
likes kids because he’s just a cool guy who appreciates that kids are
little humans rocks my world. I come from a big family. My high school
boyfriend and I spent our first Valentine’s Day together babysitting my
brother, who was then six months old. The first minute my boyfriend
walked in, my little brother was crying his head off, and I needed to
make a bottle. I handed him to my boyfriend, who was freaked out. They
became fast friends. Even though he and I broke up, I loved the way he
was always happy to include my little brother in everything we did if my
mom needed a sitter. Love that!
I always loved Matt Damon. Then he had a jillion gorgeous little
girls with his gorgeous wife…sigh! NOTHING makes a guy more adorable
than being great with kids!
5) Great Arms/Back
So, I feel like I’ve been a good, mostly deep person in the first
few traits, but let’s take a minute to appreciate the bulge of some
gorgeous shoulder muscles, the clean lines of a well-muscled back, the
ripples of developed arms. A friend of mine pointed out that all my
fictional guys have great arms. Well, there’s nothing like great arms!!
(And a nice back…love it!!)

6) Funny Guys
Not necessarily that guys have to be total joke crackers to get my
attention. Just someone who can laugh is amazing. When my husband goes
to the movies to see a comedy, he’s one of those people EVERYONE in the
entire theater turns to stare at because he’s laughing like a loon. But
it’s awesome…it makes me want to laugh like a loon with him! And I
usually do! We spend a lot of time laughing for no good reason. Which is
pretty awesome!
Love K. Dunst. Have no clue who this guy is, but I’m glad they’re having such a blast together! Laugh it up, KD!
7) Appreciation of…Me
That may sound pretty self-centered, but , I promise, it’s a two-way
street! You want to be with someone who loves and appreciates what you
do…even if it’s not his/her thing. I love to write. My husband has only
read Of Mice and Men…three times since high school. Oh, and he just read
The Mouse and the Motorcycle (what’s up with my husband and mice? Maybe
he’d read my book if I put a mouse in it?). Anyway, books aren’t his
thing. But he helps me when he can. He brainstorms with me. He listens
when I read sections out loud. He comments on my covers. He is generally
awesome and supportive. And I love him for that! And I appreciate him.
Even when he’s talking about tires and rims and wheels for weeks on end.
I just keep nodding and smiling like I know what he means.
My husband is equally as cool as Ryan Gosling. Yep. I’m not even a crazy person. He just is ;)!
8) Not Taking Yourself Too Seriously
I once dated this guy who took a lot of things seriously. Including
himself. He only liked things if they were cool/ironic enough for him to
pay attention to. He was snarky and self-centered and not that much
fun. I like a guy who can watch Scooby Doo JUST BECAUSE HE LIKES SCOOBY
DOO. No irony. No explaining that it’s just a pop culture icon, so he
has to like it. No making comparisons between Scooby and Dora and
commenting on how the easy, madcap 60s adventure became a learning
infused preschool sensation. Nope. If you like Scooby, just admit it’s
because he talks adorably and you want to smorgasbord with him!
FUNNY! Funny is soooo good!!
9) Eyes
Windows to the soul? I have no clue. I just love them soulful, with
lashes no boy should be allowed to have. I love when they crinkle at the
sides because a guy spends so much time smiling. I like messy eyebrows
and stares, glares, winks, sleepy blinks, and long, intense focused
looks. Mmm nice eyes!!
The ultimate sexy eyes!! LOVE the guyliner ;)!
10) Reformed Rebel
A real rebel is a pain in the ass. Real rebels are in trouble,
always running around and doing crazy things, hard to keep track of,
harder to deal with. But a reformed rebel? He’ll always have that bad
past, so there’s always an edge of rebellion to his good-boy status.
Plus, he’s been there and done that with pretty much everything, so he
knows a good thing when he gets it. Meaning, when he falls in love with
the right girl, he’s the most loyal, appreciative guy around.
And he’ll put out the cigarette. Smoking is NOT cool. It’s what guys
do before they know better. Then they know better and STOP! Okay, I’ll
step off my soapbox now!

Hello everyone! I'm so glad to have Sean, one of the co-authors of The Dawn of Angels, doing the special guest post in this book tour presented by Hollow Tours!
Why did I become an Indie author?
Let’s face it, every author dreams of
seeing their book in Barnes and Noble on a large display at the front or at
least sitting somewhat conspicuously on the shelf in the right section. I know
I have. So why would one throw away a chance at that recognition to become an
indie author. The easy answer is that I’m not good enough to be published by the
big publishers, so why try. While I
admit this may be the case (the jury is still out), to use it as the only
reason for a person to write indie, is not a fair representation of a growing
sector of artists.
I was the ghost writer for a book that was published—a
memoir. We even got a popular local publisher to publish it. For three months,
they marketed it fairly well and we sold about 8,000 copies. Not bad for a small
area publisher. For each book we got about a dollar, nothing to complain about
until you see how much the customer had to pay. For every dollar we got, the
customer paid at least twelve dollars, often more. This seemed ludicrous. Did
it really take that much to put the book out? The really outrageous thing was
the ebook prices, which were just as high. No one can argue printing costs for
an ebook.
As an independent author, I can post my book at a price much
lower. In my case, I will not sell a book above $2.99. I still get double the
amount I would going through a publisher, but at a far reduced cost to the
customer. Even with print on demand, I can provide a far greater savings.
Granted the publishers do market the books and this can be costly. But this marketing
last on average three months and then the book is thrown by the way side and
forgotten in the avalanche of new books coming. It still does not justify the
costs.
There is also a deeper consequence of mainstream publishing.
Mainstream publishers tend to gravitate toward gimmicks and trends. They
inhibit true creative expression that exists in other art forms by only
forwarding those books that will make them a buck. For years this has been a
detriment to writing as authors are forced to conform their styles of writing
to that which publishers will accept. A similar affect has affected music,
driving out true talent for the counterfeit kind found in the modern pop star.
The beauty of the internet and digital books is that it
opens a new gateway of expression that circumvents that corporate skittishness
that prevents them taking a risk on a new style of writing. Now an author can
take those creative risks. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won’t. I know that
I have not explored the ends of this open space with my writing, but I hope to
in the future. My true hope is that others will take hold of the vision and
explore its bounds.
Sure there will be a lot junk out there, but hopefully in
the mix will emerge something truly amazing. That is the magnificence of the
internet, out of its seeming chaos comes the most awe-inspiring innovations and
creations. Who would have guessed that through social networks revolutions
would be plotted and executed to take down dictatorships? Who would have
guessed that an encyclopedia or learning resource could emerge completely on
volunteer contributions? That is the nature of human interaction. It is both
unpredictable and remarkable. It is the essence of art and the essence of what
makes us human. It is the reason that I am an Indie author.

Oppression is your debut novel (WOOHO!).
Tell us, how did it feel when someone informed you that Oppression was going to
be a book?
When I got THE email, if felt like
my heart shot into my throat…followed by lots of jumping, flailing and screaming
(I accidently smashed a snail…poor snail). It was very surreal. I didn’t really
know what to do with myself.
Where and how did you get the
muse to write Oppression? Surely you didn’t make a visit to Hades, right? ;)
My husband was my muse. He is my
William. It was fun to write about love when I was actually falling in love
myself. The Greek myths were also an inspiration, although they were only used
as a basis for my story.
I know that some authors say
they give a piece of their soul to every character. Which character gets the
most of your soul?
Elyse. No question. I feel like she
is a part of me. A lot of the emotions she feels throughout the book are my
emotions. It was hard to write my first novel without giving my main character
a big part of my soul. I really couldn’t help it.
When you were a kid, what did
you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be a doctor. Then, when
I was a teenager I wanted to be on Broadway. I’ve always loved musical theater.
I would still love to act.
Broadway is so cool! Maybe we can see Jessica act someday! What book has made you wish you
were the one who wrote it?

It’s a beautiful and pleasant
day like every day. Suddenly, your parents tell you that you’re not human
(surprise!). What creature would you be?
I’d be a descendant…you’ll have to
read Oppression to know more about what that means ;)
If you could live in a different
time in the history, what time would you pick?
I’d live amongst the Native American
Indians before America was discovered. That time in American history is my
favorite. Plus, maybe I’d meet some of my ancestors!
What has been your best moment
being an author so far? :)
The reactions from readers have been
the best part. One advanced reader said she read Oppression in four hours, and
another emailed me after she finished RE-READING it! It was the best feeling.
